Black Friday, Cyber Monday, St Nicholas’ Day and the Christmas period: for most e-commerce businesses, Q4 is the most important time of the year. The festive season brings a surge in demand for products, and consumers are often willing to spend more than usual. This makes it a golden opportunity to maximise your turnover and attract new customers. To achieve this, it’s important to prepare thoroughly. Here are a few tips.

1. Optimise your website

Ensure your website loads quickly, is user-friendly and easy to find. Customers want to be able to shop quickly and easily. A slow or difficult-to-navigate website can result in them not placing an order or even abandoning the checkout process. And if your website isn’t easy to find, there’s a good chance they’ll go to your competitor.

  • Test, test and test some more: what is the experience your visitors have on your website? Put yourself in your target audience’s shoes. Don’t just test it yourself; ask other people too. It might help to set up a customer panel, where you assign various tasks to test your website’s user-friendliness. For example, ask them to make a purchase or look for information about a specific product. Pay close attention to the issues they encounter and where improvements could be made. This can yield valuable insights that will help you tailor your website even better to your customers’ needs.
  • Check the technical aspects: is your website technically sound? How quickly does it load? And does the checkout process in your online shop work properly? Ensure the payment process runs smoothly, without unnecessary steps or confusion. Test different payment methods and check that everything works correctly.
  • Try to make yourself as easy to find as possible: optimise your website for search engines (SEO) by incorporating key search terms into titles, meta descriptions and product descriptions. Consider paid search advertising (SEA) to appear at the top of search results, particularly during busy periods. Don’t forget to update your Google My Business page and social media to boost your visibility and attract more customers.

2. Check your stock

Check your stock levels and ensure that popular products are sufficiently available. Sold-out items during the festive season mean missed sales, which is, of course, a shame. Do you already know that a popular product is likely to be bought even more often as a result of a discount promotion? If so, make sure you have extra stock.

It is also important to check that your stock management is well organised and remains up to date during busy periods. Automate wherever possible, so that you have real-time insight into what is still available.

3. Plan promotions and offers well in advance

During Black Friday, many e-commerce businesses run special offers. Have you thought about whether you want to run a promotion during Black Friday? The following tips may help you:

– Do you remember what your main competitors were doing last year? Or can you still find this information online via, for example, their social media channels? Analysing their strategies can provide you with valuable insights. Look at the discounts they offered and how they ran their campaigns. This can help you determine what works and what doesn’t in your market.

– What campaigns and offers have you run in previous years? Evaluate the success of your previous Black Friday and festive season campaigns. Analyse which offers were most effective and which had less impact.

– Draw up an overview of promotions and offers for Q4. This will enable you to plan strategically and ensure you stand out during the busy final quarter of the year. Consider which products or services you wish to promote and determine the best way to communicate your offers to your target audience.

4. Optimise your customer service

During and around the busiest days of the year, your customer service team often receives significantly more enquiries than at any other time of the year. As you naturally want your customers to be helped as effectively and quickly as possible, there are various ways to manage the peak workload.

– Update your Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): ensure that the FAQ section on your website is up to date and comprehensive. Add specific information about your festive promotions, delivery times, returns policy and other relevant details. This can help reduce the demand for direct customer service.

– Clear communication: keep your clients clearly informed about expected dispatch times, any delays and the availability of customer service. Regular updates via email or social social can help manage expectations and reassure customers. Do you have a standard USP banner with a promise regarding delivery times? If so, check whether this is still achievable during these busy times. If this is not the case, we recommend that you adjust this temporarily.

– Training and preparation: ensure your customer service team is well prepared for the peak period. Provide training on common queries and issues that may arise during the festive season and ensure there are clear guidelines on how to handle complaints or escalations.

– Scaling up capacity: it can be helpful to temporarily scale up capacity during and around busy periods.
