Maintaining organic visibility through Answer Engine Optimisation

Summary

AI is increasingly providing direct answers to search queries. With Answer Engine Optimisation, you ensure that your content is picked up by Google AI or ChatGPT. Write clearly, use a logical structure and keep it relevant. Get started now, because those who optimise today will already have a head start tomorrow.

The organic traffic you’re still getting via Google? That’s set to decline. And quickly, too. Google is increasingly keeping users on its own platform – first with featured snippets, now with AI Overviews. This change calls for a new approach: Answer Engine Optimisation.

AI is changing the way people search

Whilst we covered AI Overviews in detail in our previous blog, we’d now like to explain more about how you can maintain visibility through AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation). Google’s Search Generative Experience (as well as other systems such as ChatGPT and Claude) answer questions directly within the search results. No click is required – a process also known as ‘zero-click search’. The user remains on Google, but you naturally still want to remain visible.

Answer Engine Optimisation helps you with this. It is the logical successor to SEO, but focused on AI algorithms. These have different preferences to a search engine. They index individual sentences and paragraphs, not entire pages.

This is how an Answer Engine thinks

Whereas a search engine examines an entire page, an answer engine scans for small fragments – such as paragraphs, individual sentences or direct answers. The AI rarely selects an entire page: it chooses the section that provides the quickest and clearest answer. It favours sources that are clear, reliable and well-structured.

ChatGPT or Bing (as well as Google’s AI Overview) primarily search for:

  • short, clear answers to a specific question
  • well-structured content that can be understood without context
  • texts from reliable sources

To capitalise on this, content needs to be structured differently.

How to write Answer Engine-optimised content that ranks well

Do you want to continue to stand out in a world of zero- clicks? Then it’s time to optimise your content. That doesn’t mean you have to rewrite your entire texts. It does mean you need to take a strategic approach:

  1. At the start of your text, provide a clear answer to the user’s question
  2. Place the most important information at the top
  3. AI prefers clear rather than complicated text, so don’t make the sentences unnecessarily long
  4. No JavaScript: ensure your content remains readable without rendering
  5. Use natural keyword density and semantic variations

As you’re probably already aware, effective AI-driven SEO isn’t about ‘keyword spamming’. It’s about clarity, structure and relevance. The easier your text is to understand, the greater the chance that AI will select it as an answer.

AEO and SEO reinforce each other

AEO is not a replacement for SEO, but an extension of it. This means that traditional search engine optimisation still plays an important role. If you rank highly in search results, there is a greater chance that your text will be picked up by an AI such as ChatGPT.

Without good SEO, you won’t rank high enough in the search results. And without good AEO, you won’t be selected by the AI. So you need both to stay visible!

Start today, gain the edge tomorrow

By getting started with Answer Engine Optimisation today, you’ll be ahead of the rest. And we’ll work with you every step of the way! So that you remain visible, even when nobody is clicking anymore.
