Oh, another Google Core Update? What does this mean?

Summary

Google has rolled out several major updates in quick succession, causing some sites to drop in rankings whilst others rise. There’s no need to panic, as fluctuations are to be expected and are often temporary. What remains important at all times is content that is valuable to your readers and offers a strong user experience. Authentic content that shows who you are and what you stand for ultimately makes the difference.

No sooner had the August Core Update been fully rolled out than Google released another one. In fact, in the final quarter of 2024, we saw no fewer than three updates, including two Core Updates and a Spam Update. What exactly happened, and what does this mean for your website?

A turbulent December

Google has not been idle over the past year. In the space of just a few weeks, we saw the following updates:

  1. November Core Update: This update began on 11 November and was completed on 5 December. Its aim was to better align search results with users’ search intent.
  2. December Core Update: Shortly afterwards, on 12 December, a new Core Update went live, which was fully rolled out within six days (on 18 December). This update once again brought about significant shifts in search results.
  3. Spam Update: As if that weren’t enough, a Spam Update followed on 19 December, which was completed on 26 December. This update focused on tackling spam content and techniques that attempt to manipulate search results.

What we see for ourselves

We are clearly seeing the impact of these updates on our clients. Although there are fluctuations in search rankings – with both rises and falls – we are pleased to see that traffic is not suffering as a result. In fact, losing rankings for irrelevant search terms can actually be a positive sign! This indicates that Google is getting better at understanding which pages are relevant to specific search queries.

How can you best respond to this?

Panicking is not an option. Major fluctuations during or after updates are often temporary. Even if your website experiences a brief dip, this can stabilise again on its own. What’s more important is how you systematically adapt to the changes Google is implementing.

Google has always made it clear that it’s all about the user. Here are a few practical tips:

  • Know your visitor and focus on valuable content
    • Understand who your target audience is and what their needs are.
    • Make sure your content addresses the questions and problems of your visitors.
    • Share unique insights or data drawn from your own expertise. The more unique and relevant your information is, the more Google will value it.
  • Internal links and target audience segmentation
    • Use internal links to direct visitors to related pages that add value.
    • Analyse your visitor data and segment it based on behaviour and search intent.
  • Be cautious with AI
    • Although AI tools are constantly improving, it is important not to simply post automatically generated text on your website.
    • Write valuable content.
  • EEAT (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)
    • This remains a key focus for Google. Showcase your expertise and reliability in your content and build a strong online reputation. Download our checklist here!

Is Helpful Content finally being prioritised?

One key question remains: does Google now have a better understanding of which search terms match the right content and landing pages? The signs are promising. It appears that Google is increasingly focusing on ‘Helpful Content’: content that is genuinely useful to the user. This means that irrelevant search queries are less likely to be directed to your page, and the focus is on quality and relevance. A good content strategy is therefore well worth the effort.

Naturally, we continue to monitor these developments closely. After all, updates from ‘Uncle G(oogle)’ are never dull and always offer new insights.
