Google AdWords is becoming Google Ads

Written by Marc Receveur

Last Wednesday, Google announced the biggest rebranding ever of its advertising software. Google says that costs will remain the same and that no services will be merged; only the name is changing. The basic tool for buying adverts is now called Google Ads. But how does it work? We’d be happy to explain!

How do Google Ads work?

Google makes most of its money from advertising. It offers a number of tools that enable businesses to place adverts. These tools are now being consolidated into Google Ads. The services therefore remain the same; only the name is changing. The success of advertising on Google is therefore set to continue. It is a good way to raise your profile amongst your target audience or potential customers, as Google Ads allow you to promote your business on Google’s search engine.

The changes

You’re probably wondering what’s going to change. Access will be granted to, amongst others, Google Search, the YouTube video service, the Google Play app store and 3 million other partners. The standard interface for Google Ads is being simplified, with automation enabling the design of adverts and determining where they should be displayed. Why is this being done? Because Google Ads is intended to serve as a comprehensive ‘front door’. The aim of the new Google Ads is to make it easier to advertise beyond the original search box. To achieve this, machine learning is being introduced to boost the effectiveness of the adverts. A new campaign type is being introduced in Google Ads, particularly for small businesses, making it easier to get started with online advertising. It brings machine learning technology to small businesses and helps them achieve results without having to put in a lot of effort.

What will change for you?

For you as a client, nothing really changes. It simply provides structure to prevent confusion. The name Google AdWords will therefore be replaced by Google Ads. New features will be added, which will make it easier, in particular, for small business owners to place adverts. The new advertising structure will come into effect on 24 July 2018. As a client, you don’t need to do anything, and the changes won’t affect the performance of your current campaigns.
