AI Overviews rolled out in the Netherlands: how should you respond to this?

Summary

Google now offers AI Overviews in the Netherlands and displays automatically generated answers at the top instead of standard links. This means fewer ‘ clicks ’, so the focus should be on clear, reliable and structure-friendly content, including relevant structured data and E-E-A-T signals to stand out as a source in these AI summaries.

Google has rolled out AI Overviews in the Netherlands. The new Google feature, which places AI-generated summaries at the top of search results, is designed to provide users with information quickly and clearly. The feature had already been rolled out in other countries, but is now also available in the Netherlands. For businesses, this represents a change in how visibility via Google Search works. Here, we explain everything you need to know about this and how you can adapt to it.

What is AI Overviews?

In a previous blog post, we mentioned that Google had announced AI Overviews during the Google I/O 2024 conference. Now the time has come for us in the Netherlands to experience ‘one of the biggest Google updates in 25 years’. At present, AI Overviews is still undergoing extensive testing and the feature has not yet been rolled out to everyone.

How does this work in practice?

Google AI Overviews are changing the way search results are presented. Instead of relying solely on traditional blue links or SERP features (such as image blocks, ‘people also ask’, product results, etc.), Google is increasingly displaying AI-generated summaries at the top of the page via AIO. These overviews appear in various forms, depending on the search type and context. The standard Google search results will be pushed further down the page by this block.

We distinguish between three categories:

Informative AIO:

  • Bulleted lists.
    • Source cited below the bullet points.
  • Basic AIO – very similar to existing Featured Snippets.
    • Source cited below the answer.
  • Basic AIO + Step-by-step guide
    • Source citation above the step-by-step guide, below the description.
  • Pros / Cons snippet
    • Does not link to sources.
  • YouTube embeds
    • Links to YouTube videos alongside additional information on the topic in question. Sometimes, additional sources are included alongside the written text.

Informative AIOs appear in response to questions such as ‘How much does an elephant weigh?’, ‘Why does my ear hurt?’ or ‘How do I assemble a wardrobe?’

Commercial AIO:

  • List of products with Breakouts. This is a list of products displaying a wealth of information: price, reviews, images and detailed descriptions.
    • The images are links to the website selling the product.
  • Answer Box. This type appears particularly with short-tail commercial search terms such as ‘sports shoes’. The Answer Box contains links to online shops, affiliates, forums and, where relevant, additional information. In the example of sports shoes, for instance, there are links to information about foot injuries.
    • Each information box contains a link to the source.
    • Sometimes the Answer Box also contains images. Each image then serves as a link to the source.

Commercial AIOs can be very extensive and varied. It is difficult to predict what type of snippet you will receive. Some snippets completely push the normal results out of the way, whilst others are smaller.

Transactional AIOs:

  • Combined ‘ Shopping ’ Cards. This is a short list of six products from different merchants. Each snippet contains only the merchant’s name, product title and price.
    • Each product is a link to the merchant
  • Product carousels. The name says it all – a row of products displaying the same information as shopping cards, but accompanied by atmospheric images.
    • Each product is a link to the merchant
  • Product viewer. A large list of products that takes over the SERP. Similar to the existing ‘ shopping ’ page on Google.
    • Each product is a link to the merchant

Transactional AIOs appear particularly for keywords indicating an immediate intention to buy. For example, ‘buy white Nike trainers’.

What is the impact of AI Overviews?

At present (June 2025), the frequency with which AIOs are displayed varies significantly from sector to sector.

  • High AIO usage: Health, business news, informative content
  • Low AIO usage: Cars, property, recipes/food.

Some notable statistics from other countries:

  • The average display rate for AIOs is currently around 6 per cent, but fluctuates significantly from month to month and across different sectors.
  • Desktop displays approximately 30 per cent more AIOs than mobile.
  • Most AIOs appear on for informational search queries, whilst commercial or transactional keywords are, as yet, targeted less frequently.

This naturally has an impact on:

  • The visibility of your pages in organic search results;
  • The click-through rate (CTR) to your website.

It is still difficult to say what the actual impact of AI Overviews will be.

How do you respond to this?

In countries where AIO is already active, it appears that Google is still actively testing and optimising the system. However, there are already areas where you can… Of course, you’ll want AI Overviews to recommend your website and content. That’s why we’ve put together a few tips.

1. Create high-quality, authoritative content

AI Overviews prioritise content that meets the E-E-A-T criteria: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness.

  • ‘Experience’ revolves around actual experience with the subject matter. This can relate to how clients have experienced a product or service, but also to the user experience of the website itself.
  • Expertise refers to demonstrable professional knowledge. This is evident from a professional background, but also from the depth and consistency of the content.
  • Authoritativeness relates to the degree of authority that a website or author exudes. An important part of this is link building: the more reliable websites that link to your page, the stronger your authority.
  • Trustworthiness refers to the reliability of your platform. Transparency regarding the author, clear contact details and a secure, well-functioning website all contribute to this.

2. Optimise for search intent and long-tail search queries

AI Overviews are more often triggered by specific, informative search queries, such as questions beginning with ‘how’, ‘what’, ‘why’, and so on. To capitalise on this, it is important to use long-tail keywords. This means focusing on longer, specific search terms that reflect users’ search intent. Here are a few tips:

  • Answer questions directly and clearly: Start your content with a clear answer to the main question.
  • Structure your content logically: use headings and subheadings to present the information clearly.
  • By creating content that closely matches search intent, you increase the likelihood of your page being included in an AI Overview.

3. Implement structured data (Schema Markup)

Structured data increases the likelihood of your content being displayed as a rich result, which not only boosts visibility but also has a positive impact on the click-through rate. By presenting your content in a structured way, you can capitalise on various SERP elements that are becoming increasingly prominent within AI Overviews. Important schemas to consider are:

  • FAQPage: suitable for pages that answer frequently asked questions. This allows you to stand out with a drop-down FAQ section directly in the search results. This makes the schema even more valuable for both search engines and users.
  • HowTo: ideal for step-by-step guides. Don’t just list the steps; include any relevant images where possible.
  • Article: use this schema for news articles, blogs and other editorial content. By adding this type of schema, you provide Google with information about the topic, the publication date, the author and, for example, the headline. This contributes to your credibility and helps you meet the E-E-A-T trustworthiness criteria.
  • Product: this template is useful for online shops and product pages. It allows you to structure information such as price, availability, brand and reviews. Particularly when combined with user reviews, this not only boosts your visibility but also enhances your authority within competitive search results.

The most important thing is that the structured data aligns with the page’s content and is technically implemented correctly.
